4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
September 11, 2001, changed the course of our country forever. On that day, nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the terrorist attacks, including 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while rushing to save others. More than two decades later, the memory of that day continues to inspire communities across the nation to come together in remembrance.
Here in Truckee, that spirit lives on through the 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, sponsored by 15 local organizations and benefiting the High Fives Foundation. On Thursday, September 11, from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., participants will gather at the staircase behind Tahoe Mountain Realty to take on a powerful challenge: climbing the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs, the height of one of the Twin Towers.
What began as a small gathering of two families has grown into a community tradition. Local organizer Alana Hughes, who lost her cousin—a firefighter—on 9/11, first honored the anniversary by traveling to New York for the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk. Wanting to bring that sense of remembrance home, she partnered with Truckee firefighter Ryan Bridges to host the first stair climb. Each year, the event has grown, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities.
The climb is more than just a physical challenge—it’s deeply personal. Some complete all 110 flights, while others dedicate their climb to a loved one by setting their own number of flights. The focus is remembrance, reflection, and connection.
This year’s event is expected to draw around 200 people and will feature live music, free food and pastries, and an atmosphere of solidarity. Participants are invited to climb at their own pace, adapt the challenge to their goals, and make the experience meaningful in their own way.
Beyond honoring the fallen, the event also shines a light on the importance of mental health. Both Hughes and Bridges have been open about their own journeys and are committed to ensuring that the stair climb also supports access to mental health resources within the Truckee-Tahoe community.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has become a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and community strength. Each step taken honors the sacrifices of the past while building hope for the future.
