There’s no denying it—residential construction in the Tahoe basin is an extremely involved process that requires significant planning, precision, craftsmanship, and skill to be successful. Consider this: at higher elevations within the Tahoe/Truckee area, homes must be engineered and constructed to support nearly 500 pounds per square foot of snow on roofs, while also withstanding wildfire, earthquake, and severe wind events—all while meeting strict standards for water quality preservation. Add in visionary designs from leading architects and interior designers, and the complexity often reaches an astounding level.

For custom luxury home builders like JMC, providing enduring value in every home means relying on vast experience, proven efficiencies, innovative processes, and thoughtful, cohesive details. Founder Jim Morrison’s world-class feats of exploration and endurance as a professional big mountain skier are well documented. That innate drive to embrace challenge and conquer the improbable is also a driver of JMC’s success. The parallels between leadership and innovation in mountain exploration and elite-level residential construction are impossible to ignore—and it is Jim’s unique vision for JMC that consistently raises the bar for what it means to be a professional builder in Tahoe.

JMC’s Senior Project Managers, Eben Schrieber and Bryan Bertsch, unquestionably embody this vision. For any builder, navigating client needs, budgets, timelines, expectations, and levels of owner involvement is a constant challenge. But for Eben and Bryan, these challenges present opportunities: to define design intent, collaborate creatively with clients, architects, and designers, and share their decades of expertise building in the Tahoe basin.

At JMC, the process is about much more than just outcomes. It’s about navigating family dynamics, prioritizing trust, and building generational homes that reflect each client’s unique style and personality.

“JMC has all the qualities you want in a builder: quality, value, and integrity. Couple that with an infectious enthusiasm for every aspect of the project and attention to detail in all phases of construction, and you get a team that delivers the best in Tahoe.”

Reflecting on the remarkable homes JMC has brought to life, I’m reminded that their mission is not only to exceed client expectations but also to elevate their trusted industry partners who share in each success. Eben and Bryan’s pride in craftsmanship is both palpable and infectious—the stoke at JMC remains undiminished.

These partnerships form a true Who’s Who of local designers, craftsmen, artists, trades, and subcontractors. The added value from these long-standing relationships is remarkable. Jim’s rallying cry of “Perfect is good enough” bridges his passions in life and captures JMC’s vision for the future—one that values clients, celebrates challenges, and remains steadfastly committed to unsurpassed quality, the Tahoe community, and authenticity.

“I have been fortunate enough to work with JMC for the past 20+ years and continue to follow the projects they are creating. It is such a pleasure to team with resourceful people who are reliable, professional, and open to new ideas throughout the creative process. Above all, JMC cares deeply about each home they build as if it were their own. The process is long, full of both challenges and victories, so the most important part is collaborating with good people who work hard, bring passion and creativity, and make it enjoyable. They love what they do—and it shows.”

Eben recalls a particularly rewarding experience when a close friend chose JMC to build their family home in Truckee’s Martis Camp. Given carte blanche to assemble his personal “A Team”—including architect Brendan Riley and designer Sarah Jones—the project carried a deep personal significance. Building for friends and family is a rare opportunity in any builder’s career, and for Eben it was an honor that underscored the trust and purpose driving JMC’s work.

Yes, residential construction in the Tahoe basin can be incredibly complex. But at its core, building a home is about embracing challenges and celebrating successes alongside family and friends.

Shouldn’t we all be so lucky?

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have collaborated with elite professionals like Jim, Eben, and Bryan. For me, Spotlighting Local Experts is more than just a blog—it’s an opportunity to celebrate the process, highlight successes, and point others in the right direction.

Thanks for the inspiration, Jim Morrison Construction!
