The community is named after Caleb Greenwood, a western U.S. fur trapper and pioneer, who was originally born in Virginia in 1763. Greenwood, along with two of his sons, also directed another party through a new avenue bypassing the Truckee River Canyon, which became a main route of the California Trail. The Sublette-Greenwood Cutoff became the most frequently traveled route for people flocking west at the time of the California Gold Rush.
