My favorite spot in Truckee (and anywhere else) has to be the Wildlife Area in Martis valley. This open meadow looks up to Lookout Mountain at Northstar and is bordered by forest and mountains. The beautiful scenery is complimented by a very accessible trail network including a 2.5-mile loop that crosses over Martis Creek and loops around into the forest before returning back to open meadow. A 4.5-mile alternative is to head up towards Northstar, connecting to the Tompkins Memorial Trail (TMT) network, skim the edge of the Northstar Golf Course before returning along the well-maintained dirt trail along Highway 267. You will always find a herd of dog walkers, babies in bjorns, and artists in addition to the fitness junkies running and biking. Those seeking greater mileage can connect to the vast TMT network winding through Northstar, onto the mountain and ultimately back to the O6 Forest Service Road for endless miles of trails.
