My Favorite in Tahoe: Independence Lake

My Favorite “Secret” Spot…

What would you get if you took Donner Lake and removed Interstate 80, the train tracks, the houses, the boats and most of the people? You would get Independence Lake – one of the most beautiful and pristine lakes in the Sierra!

In 2010, the Nature Conservancy acquired the lake and is preserving it for generations to come. Independence Lake has a virtually intact ecosystem and is home to Lahontan cutthroat trout, bald eagles, osprey, bears, deer, coyotes and many other wonderful animals and fish!

There is year-round public access to the lake, on a day use only basis. To protect the fragile area from aquatic intruders, the conservancy supplies small fishing boats and kayaks. The Lake is an approximate 45-minute drive from Truckee – part of which is on a dirt road, signed and easy to follow.

Here is a link to more information from the Nature Conservancy.

Be sure to scroll down and watch the video done by KVIE, Sacramento – Rob on the Road. The scenery is spectacular!

Just remember, this is my “secret” spot!! Don’t tell anyone!
