Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors. The cooler temperatures and changing leaves around Lake Tahoe provide a stunning backdrop and plenty of fantastic options for hiking and running. Here are 5 spectacular places to run or hike in the Fall (in no particular order):
Warren Lake
During this time of the year, the wildflowers around Warren Lake burst with hues of purple, orange, and pink! The trail down to the lake is a bit challenging, but the seclusion and the stunning views make it a worthwhile journey. Even if you don’t make it all the way down to the lake, the views from above are still absolutely breathtaking!
Frog Lake
Frog Lake is an incredible spot! By taking the Warren Lake Trail, you’ll ascend until you intersect the Red Dot Trail, which will lead you all the way down to Frog Lake. Once there, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the lake along with the 1000’ high Frog Lake Cliff in the background. If desired, there’s an option to stay at the Frog Lake Backcountry Huts during the visit.
Page Meadows
Page Meadows is particularly stunning in the fall! The beautiful leaves and the tranquil autumn ambiance make running there a magical experience. The Tahoe Rim Trail runs alongside the meadow, and there are also trails that cut through it. Access to this area is easiest from the Ward Creek trailhead.
Desolation Wilderness
Desolation Wilderness is home to numerous breathtaking and serene lakes. One standout favorite is Fontanillis Lake, accessible from the Eagle Falls trailhead in Emerald Bay. Another beloved spot is Lake Aloha, which can be reached from the Echo Lakes trailhead in South Lake Tahoe. There’s no wrong way to explore Desolation Wilderness.
Big Meadow
Another gem among Tahoe’s meadows! Big Meadow, as the name suggests, is larger than Page Meadows and also intersects with the Tahoe Rim Trail. There’s ample parking at a large trailhead, and the meadow is not far from there. Of all the options listed here, this is the most beginner-friendly.
The Tahoe region offers endless options for great places to run and hike. If you’re unsure where to start, these choices are an excellent way to begin. Get out there and enjoy the season!
