The post-Covid landscape paired with the record breaking 22’-23’ winter has uniquely influenced new construction architectural, and interior design in the Tahoe-Truckee region.  Functionality, lifestyle preferences and ever evolving consumer demands, keep architects, builders, and interior designers agile and responsive to market conditions. Our brokerage had the pleasure of sitting down with esteemed owner & principal of Sandbox Design Studio, Scott Gillespie & Debbie Costa of Moxie Design Studio to better understand current and future trends.

  • Sense of Privacy: Consumers/end-users tend to spend more time at their post-covid second home as remote work seems here to stay. When choosing a homesite consider orientation & space, perhaps even the option to expand the property for future generations.
  • Light: Go big on glass to incorporate views and natural light. Sunlight is incredibly important in creating bright inviting spaces in the home. Light wood is also a trend, i.e.) European White Oak.
  • Color is in–Gray is Out: Earth tones, warmth and pops of color are replacing cooler, more sterile grays, and blues in interior design.
  • Sustainability: Organic and sustainable furniture/furnishings have replaced “fast” furniture. Energy efficiency, electric car chargers and solar panels are increasingly prevalent in building codes and preferences.
  • Flexible Spaces: The office/workout/overflow bedroom concept remains a sought-after feature. Flexible spaces are an efficient use of square footage and cost.

If building a custom home is in your future, connecting with trusted contractors early in the process is imperative. Contact me for a list of preferred vendors, walk homesites, and discuss your dream home ideas.
